Teeth Whitening

Most teeth whitening methods are perfectly safe, especially when a dentist performs the procedure. We offer a variety of options offering similar results, ranging from:

  • a one-hour, in-office procedure
  • a take-home version that works gradually, over about two weeks.

We use Zoom in-house teeth whitening treatments. Years worth of teeth stains caused by coffee, red wine, soft drinks, and smoking can be significantly lightened for a bright beautiful smile. Our in-office Zoom teeth whitening procedure can lighten your teeth by 8 or more shades with a quick treatment and long-lasting results.

Does teeth whitening damage my teeth?

There is no evidence to show that whitening of teeth damages the enamel. However, you must take care prior to whitening, to ensure all existing restorations are perfectly sealed. Existing porcelain crowns or veneers should not be bleached as the bleach will cause the glazed porcelain surface to lose their shine.

How long will it last?

The longevity of the procedure varies between patients and depends on your diet, what you regularly drink and your oral hygiene habits. Regular exposure of  your teeth to coffee, tea, certain foods, red wine, orange juice or smoking will start the yellowing cycle again.

We recommended reducing exposure to known habits that stain teeth. You can also carry out a “Top-Up” home bleach for 3 to 5 days every 3 to 6 months using take-home bleach trays to extend the life of your whitening process.

Does it make my teeth sensitive?

If you have exposed root surfaces you will get some degree of sensitivity. The sensitivity is not permanent and will resolve as soon as you stop the bleaching process. We will assess and discuss the likelihood of sensitivity and ways of reducing it after your procedure.

Can I correct discolouring by antibiotics?

Tetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat a number of illnesses in adults and children. It is known to cause severe staining of teeth if used by growing children, and sometimes with prolonged use in young adults. Affected teeth have a grey or dark brown appearance and often dark bands running across the front of the teeth. Typically these teeth do not respond well to whitening procedures.

Porcelain veneers are a truly beautiful answer to this problem. A once dark and unattractive smile can be a brilliant and beautiful white one.

Call the surgery for a consultation so that an assessment can be made to determine if your teeth can be brilliantly whitened. We will discuss in more detail the different options with explanations of time and costs involved.
